Overview

Engineered for Precision and Effective Offset Flail Mowing

When you need reliable vegetation management around trees, sidewalks, buildings, or tight property edges, the BEFCO H40-S flail mower delivers the precision and control professionals expect. Designed for compact tractors from 16–40 HP (12–30 kW), this commercial-grade unit provides exceptional cutting performance in a durable, easy-to-handle package.

The H40-S is available in 48″, 60″, and 72″ working widths, allowing you to match the mower to your property size and mowing demands. Its side-shift capability, offering up to 16″ (≈40 cm) of right-hand offset, makes it easy to mow around tree trunks, fence lines, walls, and irregular borders without extra maneuvering.

Built for long service life, the mower features sealed self-aligning rotor bearings, reinforced pulleys, SPBX belts, and a reversible Cat.1 hitch for front or rear mounting flexibility. These components deliver smoother operation, reduced downtime, and dependable performance across turf, pasture, orchard rows, and roadside vegetation.

A dual-position rear roller maintains consistent finish quality and reduces material buildup during heavy mowing. Multiple blade configurations—including fine-cut, reverse “Y”, paddle, hammer, and dethatching—allow you to tailor the mower for turf maintenance, orchard undergrowth, or brushier terrain.

In everyday use, the BEFCO H40-S mounts easily to your Category 1 compact tractor, offsets to reduce tire tracks, and adapts to your cutting environment with tool-free blade versatility. It’s a rugged, long-lasting offset flail mower engineered for precision, safety, and consistent performance.

FAQs

What is a side shift flail mower?

A side-shift flail mower is a flail mower designed with a movable cutting head that can slide left or right to extend beyond the tractor’s wheel path. This side-to-side offset allows the operator to mow closer to trees, fence lines, buildings, vineyard rows, ditches, and other obstacles without repositioning the tractor.

Side-shift mowers improve mowing efficiency, reduce missed areas, and provide greater control in tight or uneven spaces. They are commonly used in orchards, vineyards, municipalities, and property maintenance where precise edge mowing is needed.

What are the disadvantages of a flail mower?

Flail mowers are extremely durable and versatile, but they do have a few drawbacks:

  • Higher horsepower requirement – They need more tractor power than rotary mowers of the same width, especially for heavy brush.

  • More maintenance – A flail mower has many individual knives/flails, so inspections and replacements are more frequent.

  • Slower mowing speed – They typically cut slower, making them less efficient for very large, open fields.

  • Higher cost – Flail mowers usually cost more upfront, and replacement flails add to long-term expenses.

  • Not ideal for simple lawn care – They’re designed for heavy vegetation and roadside or orchard work, not light residential mowing.
How fast can you drive with a flail mower?

Most flail mowers are designed to operate at 3–5 mph (5–8 km/h) during normal mowing. The exact speed depends on the mower’s size, the tractor’s horsepower, and the density of the vegetation.

  • Light grass: Up to 5–6 mph (8–10 km/h)

  • Heavy grass or weeds: Around 3–4 mph

  • Brush, saplings, or rough terrain: 2–3 mph for safety and cleaner results

For best performance, always maintain the mower’s recommended PTO speed (usually 540 RPM) and adjust ground speed based on cutting conditions.
